Elms Bank students prepare to launch the Unsworth Community Hub
Elms Bank college students, staff and volunteers are working together to transform the old Unsworth Library into a vibrant new community centre offering a wealth of activities and facilities.
The new Unsworth Community Hub will not only provide a library, but there will also be a computer area, a cafe, an exhibition centre and an arts and craft shop open to the public. The space will provide a lively centre for meetings and activities for the whole community, including craft workshops, book clubs, children's events, and local history groups. Elms Bank students will gain valuable work experience at the Hub, and although the pandemic has meant that they cannot open the Hub yet, this hasn't stopped them reaching out to the local community. The whole purpose of the Hub is to provide a service to benefit the local community. Students have embraced this concept, and in December they took on the role of Santa and created and delivered 800 Christmas activity bags to local children.
With the help of a National Lottery grant, the building has been updated and a fabulous local history exhibition has been set up. Work is now underway to transform the mezzanine floor. Everybody at Elms Bank is excited about the grand opening of the Hub, which will be announced as soon as national restrictions allow.
